A greeting from Africa

On Monday, Richard Lundgren and Eezer's zealous Lars Klingsbo landed in Bujumbura in Burundi. Lars has been there many times and for Richard it is his third trip. During the week, they will follow up both the manufacture and use of the ambulances. They will also hold discussions on how Eezer will scale up the project with Congo in mind.

A greeting

Here is a greeting from Richard on site in Bujumbura.

“Is in Bujumbura this week for a meeting on the initiative of the EEzer gang with two organizations from Congo and our partner Cepbu in Burundi. Because the Gang in Burundi has managed to get the wagons into operation so quickly, the idea is to start planning to deliver our motorcycle ambulances in Congo right now.

For those of you who do not know EEzer, we are a bunch of enthusiasts led by Lars Klingsbo who deliver motorcycle ambulances in inaccessible areas. In these areas, up to 2 per 1000 births result in the mother dying and a major reason is that they do not go to the clinic because there are no accessible roads.

We soon have 50 crews in different parts of Africa and now we enter the next phase when we have learned where they do the most good.

We will spend the week going out and studying some of the crews we have in operation here so that the Congolese representatives can see how they can fit into their clinics. Doctors, nurses and directors from a sister organization in Congo represent close to 200 clinics in rural areas. Among other things, he is one of Dr. Mukwege's closest collaborators (Nobel laureate and director of the Panzi clinic.)

If it turns out that we think we see, that the wagons can be useful in Congo, is a possible way to start a pilot study. To send two carriages to 2 clinics from Bujumbura located near the border. Our guess based on available statistics is that between 1,000 and 10,000 crews are required to ensure safe transport to the clinics in Burundi.

With efficient local production, it should be possible to make them for 5-600 dollars per unit. Motorcycles cost about $ 1,400 there.

Feel free to contact me or Lars if you or someone you know has ideas on how we can finance more crews. Eor have the opportunity to join one of our follow-up trips.

Will be back with more updates from this week's meetings about what we come up with. ”

More about the Burundi mission

The first time Lundgren went to Burundi was in October 2018. At that time, Richard and blacksmith Elvis were on site to educate local people to build Eezer's ambulances. In the spring of 2021, Eezer sent down a container with materials and equipment to be able to set up a workshop and build 50 wagons. Once the container was in place, the local population began to build some wagons.

To start production and to ensure the quality of the wagons, a group went down in August 2021. They set up the workshop and worked together with the local team to start a rational production. In the autumn of 2019, they went down to Burundi to set up a small workshop to manufacture 48 ambulances locally.

To save lives

During a follow-up trip to Kenya in May, it was seen that the carriages are used extensively. That the number of pregnant women who come to the clinics has increased. However, it is difficult to measure how many lives the wagons actually save. But, the equation is pretty simple. Maternal mortality is a major problem and transport to the clinics is a bottleneck. The more wagons that come into operation, the more lives are saved! And in the long run, it will be seen in the statistics on maternal mortality.

To get there, Eezer needs materials for more carriages, buying motorcycles, training drivers, finding local collaborations, following up the crew, etc. Everyone who wants to can join and contribute. Either through financial contributions or practical efforts. Feel free to visit Eezer for more information. And, contact Lars or Richard if you want to know more or want to help. I promise it is an indescribable feeling to be part of making the world a little better!
